大學原為禮記第四十二篇，約為秦漢之際儒家作品。一說曾子作。提出明明德、親民、止於至善的三綱領和格物、致知、誠意、正心、修身、齊家、治國、平天下的八條目。宋代程顥、程頤兄弟從禮記中把它抽出，以與論語、孟子、中庸相配合。至南宋淳熙年間（1174-—1189），朱熹撰四書集注，將它和中庸、論語、孟子合為“四書”。
