《明史》是二十四史最後一部，共三百三十二卷，包括本紀二十四卷，志七十五卷，列傳二百二十卷，表十三卷。它是一部紀傳體斷代史，記載了自朱元璋洪武元年（西元1368年）至朱由檢崇禎十七年（西元1644年）二百多年的歷史。其卷數在二十四史中僅次於《宋史》，其修纂時間之久、用力之勤則是大大超過了以前諸史。《明史》雖有一些曲筆隱諱之處，但仍得到後世史家廣泛的好評。
