While developing apps in Los Angeles, Fred Scarf was scouted to model and amassed over 500k followers. Because of his modeling jobs, he couldn’t afford to guess with his skincare routine. As a UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in technology, Scarf created Stop Guessing, which uses machine learning to figure out what skincare ingredients your skin needs.

The idea

Your Skincare should be as smart as your smartphone. That’s why Stop Guessing uses supervised machine learning to figure out what ingredients your skin needs. Machine learning is a type of computer science that allows computers to recognize images and predicts solutions.


How does the Stop Guessing app helps you stop guessing?


After you use Stop Guessing to take a picture of your face, it will ask you to touch your skin problems. What’s happening is that you are labeling your skin issues.


Then our professionals and doctors check to make sure your skin problems are accurately labeled (for example, your acne is really acne... and not a mosquito bite).

After we confirm the accuracy of the image, we will assign the right ingredients.

You receive the treatment. Check back with us in a month, and then determine the success of the ingredients and determine the next steps.

As Your Skin Changes, We use Data to Change Your Skincare Routine

As your skin changes, your skincare routine will, too. Stop Guessing monitors the changes in your skin through monthly updates. Every month, you are required to take a picture and a dermatologist will see how your skin is reacting to current ingredients, track your skin’s progress and track changes.

Why is this so special?

The genius behind the Stop Guessing App is that it is using artificial Intelligence. Research shows that artificial intelligence is at the point where it can outperform doctors. Artificial neural networks already outperform humans in image and object recognition and predictions. Research also finds that machine learning models are not only more accurate but, can now exceed the diagnosis accuracy of human doctors. That’s because the methods used by models are more “outside the box” creativity in diagnosis.
