Designed by an MIT graduate, this chemistry app offers a library of organic chemistry questions along with to-the-point answers and explanations. Level of difficulty is targeted at 2nd-year chemistry undergraduates in North America, but students will also find it a useful way to study organic chemistry for GRE, MCAT, SAT, etc. Download and try this free chemistry course today.β¨
About the creator
Dr. Julian Chan, co-founder and CEO of StrictlyApp, obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2010. He was subsequently a research chemist at UC Berkeley (USA, 2010-2012) and IBM Almaden (USA, 2012-2014) before becoming a chemistry professor at University of Ottawa (Canada, 2015-2019). In Oct 2019, Dr. Chan departed from academia and established StrictlyApp.
How to learn Organic Chemistry (even if you hate it!)
Organic Chemistry is notorious for being difficult. Worse still, it is unique in that you can spend countless hours learning organic chemistry and still score badly on your chemistry test. This makes many students feel frustrated and helpless. How then does one overcome this fearsome subject? You need three things to do well on chemistry tests:
1. Ability to remember a lot of infoβ¨
2. Ability to apply that info correctly
3. Accurate judgment & intuitionβ¨
How NOT to study Organic Chemistry
Many students think studying Organic Chemistry only involves rote memorization of organic chemistry reactions and the reaction mechanism. In fact, this would be the best way to spend countless hours studying chemistry and still fail, much like an aspiring boxer learning to throw different punches but not knowing how to fight. If you only have #1 but not #2 or #3, you will do poorly on chemistry exams.
How this Quiz App will help you
The best way to excel is to do as many organic chemistry questions as possible, which is what this chemistry app provides. After all, chemistry exams test your problem-solving skills. So, if you learn organic chemistry by just reading a textbook or lecture notes but never doing chemistry problems, chances are you wonβt even know how to begin on an exam.
How to excel without blind memorization
You need frequent practice to develop #2 and #3. By doing organic chemistry problems, you acquire context for the chemical theory you have studied. This helps you apply things correctly, and in time, gain an intuitive ability to know which organic chemistry reactions apply where. To help you, our free app provides:
β’ A library of problems for organic chemistry practiceβ¨
β’ Wide range of organic chemistry topics
β’ Explanations after the chemistry problems
Explanations and tips are concise and focused. As your chemistry tutor, I cut to the chase and identify key chemical concepts you need to know to solve it β straight to the point with no fluff.
How to use this Quiz App
βOrganic Chemistry Iβ is geared toward a 1st-semester undergraduate organic chemistry course and covers topics on Structure (Part A) and Reactivity (Part B). If you are a new user, I recommend doing chemistry problems in numerical order and the App will keep track of your progress. Later on, you can go to Settings and turn on βShuffle Modeβ to mix things up. Think of this as your free organic chemistry course or organic chemistry quiz. And if you are already competent in the subject, you can use the app as an organic chemistry game to refresh different concepts.
Coming in Summer 2020
Our sequel app, βOrganic Chemistry IIβ, is set to launch this summer and will offer coverage of chemical concepts such as nucleophilic substitution, E1/E2 elimination reactions, NMR, and carbonyl chemistry. Many more organic chemistry reactions and organic chemistry mechanisms will be included. This will be all the chemistry help you need to supplement your chemistry lectures and textbook.
