In aquarium hobby, parameter management is a crucial practice for the proper development of our natural plants, corals and fish.
You can make specific measurements for fresh or salt water aquariums, with a history of the following parameters:
PH: Determine how acidic or alkaline the water in our aquarium is, it depends on the amount of hydrogen and hydroxyl dissolved. It is directly related to KH and GH.
KH: Hardness, it tells us how much capacity our aquarium water has to maintain a stable pH (buffer or buffer capacity). It depends on the amount of carbonates dissolved in the water. It is directly related to PH and GH.
GH: General hardness, refers to dissolved concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. When it is said that a fish/plant/coral prefers softer or harder waters, it refers to this parameter. It is directly related to PH and KH.
NO2: Nitrites, their presence must be zero in the aquarium, mainly because it is very harmful for the life of the fish.
NO3: Nitrates, are much less toxic than nitrites, and are part of the macronutrients that our plants need to grow.
PO4: Phosphates, is a macronutrient that plants need to grow. Decompensation of phosphate concentration is one of the main causes of the appearance of algae.
K: Potassium, is the only necessary macronutrient that is not generated naturally in the aquarium, we must always provide it as fertilizer for natural plants.
FE: Iron, is the main micronutrient that we must control in our aquarium, it is necessary for the proper grow of plants in the aquarium. If there is a lot, it can cause algae.
Salinity: Is the measure of all salts dissolved in water, is extremely important in saltwater aquariums, and is the first parameter that is controlled when preparing artificial salt water
CA: Calcium, a necessary nutrient in marine aquariums, for the correct growth of corals and fish. Very necessary to control in ‘reef’ style aquariums.
MG: Magnesium, like calcium, is very important to control in marine aquariums so that our corals and fish grow healthy.
It is important to keep a diary of what happens in our aquarium for the health of it, to know what mechanisms we must apply to a problem. You can keep as many aquariums as you want, check the measurement history at any time and add observations in the notes field, you can also see the evolution of your aquariums in graphs with the latest measurements made.
Also, Aquanotes has a list of calculators with which you can calculate the liters/gallons of your aquariums based on the measurements, how much substrate you need for your new projects, calculate the correct solution to fertilize with NPK salts or calculate the amount of CO2 dissolved in water.
