Among Us Character Guide - Every Role Explained

Among Us started as a simple game of deception, where Crewmates had to complete tasks while Impostors tried to eliminate them. Over time, new roles were added to the action game, making the game more dynamic. These roles introduced new mechanics, giving players different abilities and responsibilities beyond just surviving or deceiving.
This guide will cover every role in Among Us, breaking down their abilities, objectives, and best strategies. Whether you’re trying to complete tasks faster, catch an Impostor, or cause chaos as a neutral character, understanding each role is as important as knowing each of the maps. Let’s take a look at all the roles and how they change the game.
Crewmate
- Objective: Complete all tasks or vote out all Impostors.
- Abilities: Can complete tasks and report dead bodies.
- Weakness: No special powers, making them vulnerable to Impostors.
Crewmates are the backbone of Among Us. Their main job is to complete tasks spread across the map while staying alert for suspicious behavior. If Crewmates finish all tasks before Impostors eliminate them, they win.
A big part of playing Crewmate well is gathering information. Watch for players faking tasks, follow voting patterns, and remember who was last seen near a reported body. Sticking with a group can increase your survival chances, but be careful—sometimes, the Impostor is hiding among your allies.
Impostor
- Objective: Eliminate Crewmates until Impostors outnumber them.
- Abilities: Fake tasks, sabotage, kill Crewmates, and use vents.
- Weakness: Can be voted out if caught acting suspiciously.
Impostors thrive on deception. Their goal is to eliminate Crewmates while avoiding suspicion. Since they can’t actually complete tasks, they must fake them to blend in. Sabotaging is a powerful tool—cutting off lights, locking doors, or triggering a reactor meltdown can create confusion and separate Crewmates, making them easier targets.
A smart Impostor knows when to act and when to wait. Killing too quickly can make them obvious, but hesitating too long can lead to Crewmates finishing tasks. Self-reporting a body or accusing someone else can also throw others off track, but it’s a risky move if not timed well.
Ghost
- Objective: Continue supporting your team after death.
- Abilities: Move through walls, see other ghosts, and (Crewmate ghosts) complete tasks or (Impostor ghosts) sabotage.
- Weakness: Cannot interact with living players except through sabotages (Impostor) or task completion (Crewmate).
Ghosts don’t leave the game after dying—they still have a role to play. Crewmate ghosts should focus on finishing tasks, while Impostor ghosts can help by sabotaging key systems to create opportunities for their team.
Since ghosts can see everything, it’s frustrating not being able to warn teammates, but finishing tasks quickly can still help win the game.
Engineer
- Objective: Help Crewmates by completing tasks and using vents wisely.
- Abilities: Can use vents like an Impostor.
- Weakness: Limited venting time and can be mistaken for an Impostor.
The Engineer role gives Crewmates a new way to move around the map quickly. However, using vents too often can make them look suspicious, as only Impostors are normally able to do this. A good Engineer should use venting sparingly and be ready to prove their innocence when questioned.
One strategy is to save venting for emergencies, like avoiding an incoming Impostor or fixing sabotages faster. If you see an Impostor use a vent, catching them in the act and revealing them in meetings can turn the game in your team’s favor.
Scientist
- Objective: Monitor player vitals and help identify Impostors.
- Abilities: Can check a live vitals monitor from anywhere.
- Weakness: Limited battery charge for vitals ability.
Scientists provide crucial information by checking the status of every player. If a Crewmate suddenly dies and you see it on the vitals monitor, you can quickly alert others. However, the ability has a battery that drains over time, so using it wisely is key.
A good Scientist should stay near important areas where they can still be useful after their vitals monitor runs out. If you notice someone die but don’t see a report, it could mean the killer is camping the body to avoid discovery.
Guardian Angel
- Objective: Protect living Crewmates from being killed.
- Abilities: Can temporarily shield a Crewmate from an Impostor’s attack.
- Weakness: Can’t communicate directly or perform tasks.
Once eliminated, a Crewmate may become a Guardian Angel instead of a regular ghost. This lets them place a protective shield on a teammate, preventing them from being killed for a short time.
Timing is everything. Shielding someone too early might waste the ability, while waiting too long might mean missing a critical moment. A good strategy is to protect Crewmates who are actively solving the game, like those calling out Impostors.
Shapeshifter
- Objective: Blend in and deceive Crewmates.
- Abilities: Can disguise as another player for a limited time.
- Weakness: Leaves behind evidence of shapeshifting.
The Shapeshifter is an Impostor with extra deception. They can copy another player’s appearance, making it harder to track who the real killer is. This ability is especially useful for framing others or causing chaos during discussions.
However, the transformation isn’t perfect. Shapeshifting leaves behind visual clues, and if a Crewmate sees you shift, your cover is blown. The best approach is to shift in hidden areas and strike when no one is watching.
Noisemaker
- Objective: Alert Crewmates when killed.
- Abilities: Emits a loud alarm upon death, revealing the kill location.
- Weakness: No other special abilities.
Noisemakers make Impostors’ lives harder. If an Impostor eliminates a Noisemaker, everyone is instantly alerted to the kill’s location. This forces Impostors to be more cautious about their attacks.
Since Noisemakers don’t have any additional powers, they should play like regular Crewmates but stay in high-traffic areas to ensure their ability is most effective.
Tracker
- Objective: Keep tabs on a chosen player.
- Abilities: Can track a Crewmate’s location on their mini-map.
- Weakness: Limited ability that doesn’t directly reveal Impostors.
Trackers provide valuable information by following a player’s movements. If their target ends up near a dead body, they might be able to connect the dots.
Using this role well means selecting a suspicious player early and watching for inconsistencies in their movement. However, the ability doesn’t reveal who the Impostor is directly, so Trackers still need to rely on discussions to make their case.
Phantom
- Objective: Deceive Crewmates by vanishing.
- Abilities: Can turn invisible temporarily.
- Weakness: Cannot attack while invisible.
Phantoms add an extra layer of deception to the Impostor side. They can vanish, making it harder to track their movements and escape suspicion.
This ability works best in tricky situations, like avoiding being caught near a body or setting up an alibi. However, since they can’t attack while invisible, they must time their actions carefully.
Among Us keeps evolving with new roles and mechanics, making every match different. Whether you’re a Crewmate solving tasks, an Impostor deceiving others, or a special role with unique abilities, understanding your character is key to winning.
