We highly recommend players make their own decisions by taking reference from this guide as Black Clover M is not yet launched. There’s always a chance of some last-minute changes happening for the global version of the game.

Here are the different sub-topics being covered in this guide:

  • Understanding the Summoning System
  • Understanding the Battle System and Combat Mechanics
  • Understanding the Character Roles

Basics of Summoning System

Black Clover M is a gacha game where players can pull/summon for different types of characters through the different summoning banners. Each character are further differentiated based on their base rarity. This is due to the fact that each rarity has their own base probability of being summoned from the gacha system. This is the standard trope of gacha games. The higher the rarity of the character, the lower will be the chance of summoning them. The lower the rarity of the character, the higher will be the chance of summoning them. Over time, you will get familiar to the system if you’re a new player and you already know it well if you’re a veteran of the genre. Further, Black Clover M does a great job at explaining the summoning mechanics within the tutorial.

Now, the gacha system in Black Clover M has both characters and Skill pages to offer. Characters have an overall chance of 60% of being summoned while Skill pages overall have a 40% chance of being summoned. These probabilities are further divided based on the individual rarity differences that exist within both characters and skill pages.

Here are the different rarities of characters/skill pages and their rates:

SSR Characters – 2.5% Probability of being summoned

SR Characters – 14% Probability of being summoned

R Characters – 43.5% Probability of being summoned

SSR Skill Page – 1.5% Probability of being summoned

SR Skill Page – 10% Probability of being summoned

R Skill Page – 28.5% Probability of being summoned

Black Clover M is home to multiple summoning banners. Here are the different summoning banners new players will see when they first go to the Summoning menu:

Rate-Up Summoning Banner – In this summoning banner, players can summon R-SSR characters and skill pages with a fixed probability. This banner is the most recommended one to use your initial summons on when you’re trying to re-roll in the game. In this banner, some SSR characters and SSR Skill Pages have a higher chance of being summoned. Starlight Revelation is the summoning currency used for making the summons on this banner. A special discounted rate of only 3000 Starlight Revenant will be applied as opposed to the regular 6000 Starlight Revelation for 10 summons. This banner will disappear once players have made the 20 summons on it. It is ideal for re-rolling.

Normal Summoning Banner – In this summoning banner, players can summon 1-3 Star characters. This summoning banner usually features a particular character as a rate-up which means players will have a higher chance of summoning that particular character. Players are guaranteed to summon the rate-up 3-Star character after doing 300 summons on the banner by exchanging their fragment dust. Soul Tickets are the summoning currency that is primarily used here. Players can obtain Soul Tickets from events as part of the new character introduction. Do not worry as you can use your Starlight Revelation as well to summon on this banner. Each 10 sets of summons cost 10 Soul Tickets or 6000 Starlight Revelation.

Beginner Summoning Banner – In this special summoning banner, players can summon R-SSR characters and skill pages with a fixed probability. This banner is given to all players that are going to be playing the game. In this banner, players are guaranteed to summon at least 1 SSR Character and 1 SSR Skill Page. The number of available characters are limited and not all SSR characters can be pulled from this banner. Players can summon 20 times in a row for free, with each summon being a 10 pull. This banner will disappear once players have made the 20 summons on it. It is ideal for re-rolling.

Here is a brief overview of the different summoning currencies used:

Black Crystal – A consumable material that is used to summon heroes in different summoning banners. Players can get Black Crystal from completing certain events quests, achievements or by purchasing directly via microtransactions.

Kizuna Gacha Ticket – A consumable material that is used to summon heroes in different summoning banners. Players can get this currency from completing different missions such as daily missions, pre-registration rewards, and event missions. These tickets can also be purchased by using Black Crystals at the cost of 1200 Black Crystals for 10 Kizuna Gacha Tickets.

Understanding the Combat Mechanics

The combat mechanics of Black Clover M are quite easy to understand for veterans of the genre who have played similar turn-based games. For the new players, they are not as complex but will definitely require some practicing first to master. First things first, no matter at which stage of the game you are, you are going to require at least 4 characters to make a team formation. Each character can and should be equipped with a Skill page to enhance its power. The beginning stages are quite easy but the power level of enemies gradually starts getting ridiculous and this will require you to think through.

Black Clover M makes use of the type/element system that is infamous for making the game more strategic in nature. This is the same system that is used time and again, ever since the Pokemon days. Each character is assigned a specific type/element. Each element is stronger/weaker against another element. Some elements are also neutral against some elements.

Here are the different elements and their relationships with each other:

Technique Element – Technique element is stronger against Power element but weak against Sense element.

Sense Element – Sense element is stronger against Technique element but weak against Power element.

Power Element – Power element is stronger against Sense element but weak against Technique element.

As we can see from above, it’s a classic case of bringing the better elemental characters in fights to gain an advantage against the enemies. Do not worry as you will see which enemies are good/bad against your character when you are in battle as the game highlights the elements. How big is the advantage you might be asking? Well, here’s the advantages and disadvantages associated with elemental differences:

Great – When you have type advantage, gain DMG +20%, Crit Rate +10%.

Bad – When you have type disadvantage, lose DMG -20%, Crit Rate -10%

Good – When you are neutral, you get neither bonuses nor penalties.

In Black Clover M, forming a balanced team is going to be the key when fighting any enemy. This calls for more strategy and tact rather than mindlessly brute forcing your way through the enemies. While brute forcing might work in the early game, this strategy is destined to fail at higher level content due to the enemies simply scaling way better than your characters. Bringing a variety of different types of characters is the key to winning battles. A good team formation recommendation would be to bring 2 Attackers, 1 Defender, and 1 Supporter/Healer. In some cases, you can even bring 1 Supporter, 1 Healer, 1 Attacker, and 1 Defender. Before starting any battle, you will be given a preview of the enemies coming in the battle. Preparing a team of character having elemental advantage over them is going to be very useful.

The battle mechanics are quite easy. Each character can only act on his/her own turn (Some exceptions might be there in case of special passive ability or trait of the character). Players can view this turn order of your allies and enemies from the right-hand side of the battle screen. Each battle may contain multiple waves of enemies, and you will need to defeat all of them. The Action Gauge of the characters is located at the bottom of their icon and highlighted by yellow color. The fill rate of the action gauge is dependent on the individual Speed stat of each hero. The higher the speed, the faster the Action gauge will fill. The HP Bar is denoted by the green-colored bar above the action gauge bar. Once this goes down to 0, your character will be defeated.

Black Clover M features a lot of handy Quality-of-life features such as increased battle speed, auto battle, and auto-repeat battle. Remember that the enemy AI (Artificial Intelligence) will always target the weaker elemental characters first.

Understanding the Character Roles

All the characters in Black Clover M have a specific role that they need to fulfil to be useful for the team formation. As we previously said, a team formation should have some sort of harmony between them in order to be efficient and useful. You cannot expect to win battles by brute forcing with 4 DPS or tanking with 4 Defenders in the team. A good mix of different types of characters will take you a long way.

Here are the different roles that each character is assigned by the game:

Defender – As the name itself might suggest, these characters are the best at defending. Defending in Black Clover M not only means saving your allies but also being a great tank for the team. They are usually the tankiest member of the team and they have the highest HP pools. Having a damage absorber in the team nullifies the threat of your squishy damage dealers being targeted often. Some Defenders are even known for doing good damage themselves as their ability damage might scale from their HP% or Defense%.

Attacker/DPS – Attackers are the core of any team in Black Clover M. These characters are going to decide the fate of your team as many stages in the game demand a damage check. If your DPS is unable to beat the enemies before they kill your allies, it’s going to be game over. Do not worry as these characters are built to damage and have high base Attack, Critical hit chance%, and Critical Hit damage%. Their abilities also have good damage multipliers. Attackers should generally be protected at all costs as they are the main source of damage in any formation. You can even use 2 different Attackers in the team if you feel the stage is easy or if you feel you’re lacking in damage.

Supporter – Support characters are the backbone of many team formations. They possess magical skills that can change the tide of battles at any given point of time. This is particularly due to the fact that they have unique mechanics and abilities such as reducing skill cooldowns, applying crucial buffs, or crucial debuffs to enemies.

Healer – Healers are very important as well as they are the only characters that can heal allies. They are especially good in tougher stages where you lack survivability. Some healers can also double down as supports by applying amazing buffs to your allies.
