A Guide to Unlocking and Upgrading Heroes in Gemstone Legends
Heroes are what make the adventure possible in Gemstone Legends. Each hero has their own set of unique characteristics that can go hand in hand with the abilities of other heroes to defeat the forces of dark magic. You will unlock and play many heroes as you continue your epic journey. The obstacles ahead will only become more difficult so it is paramount that you upgrade your heroes so that they can be at par with the challenges.
There are plenty of things that you need to know about heroes in Gemstone Legends. But don’t worry because this game guide summarizes all of the information that you need to know about managing your extraordinary heroes.
Basic Information
As of writing, there are 217 heroes in Gemstone Legends. These hundreds of heroes are subdivided into various categories. The most distinct categories are the colors and rarities. Additionally, each hero has varying stats depending on the role and class.
Heroes are segregated into five different colors. These colors are: red, blue, green, yellow, and purple. These are not just mere decorations but in fact, they actually play a huge role during combat. The respective color of a hero determines who they are strong and weak against. For instance, a blue hero deals more damage to red heroes but receives more damage from green ones.
You can read more about how this system works in this game guide about Gemstone Legend’s interesting combat system.
Each hero also has a rarity. Rarity essentially dictates the base strength of hero. This is measured by the number of stars that a hero has. The more stars, the more powerful a hero is (and also the more expensive). The hierarchy goes as follows:
- ★ (Common)
- ★★ (Uncommon)
- ★★★ (Rare)
- ★★★★ (Epic)
- ★★★★★ (Legendary)
Lastly, heroes are fundamentally composed of nine unique stats. These stats determine the combat abilities of a hero. The nine stats are:
- Health Points (HP) – the durability of a hero
- Attack (ATK) – amount of damage dealt to an enemy
- Defense (DEF) – amount of damage deducted after receiving damage from an enemy
- Speed (SPD) – determines who takes the first turn in battle
- Resistance (RES) – chance of preventing the effects of a negative status effect
- Accuracy (ACC) – determines how much RES a hero has
- Critical Chance (CRIT RATE) – probability of dealing a critical hit (a form of attack that deals greater than normal damage)
- Critical Damage – the amount of damage in a critical hit
- Mana Gain (MANA GAIN) – amount of Mana produced whenever a gemstone – bearing the same color that the hero has – matches
Roles and Classes
As mentioned, the heroes stats determine what their roles and classes are. There are three roles that heroes can have. The role determines the hero’s specialties and should help give you an idea of how they are supposed to be used in combat. Each role is further divided into several classes. The three roles, as well as their respective classes, are:
- Attacker – heroes with this role are primarily responsible for dealing with damage. Their main drawback is that they don’t have much HP.
Class | Specializations / Strengths |
Mage |
|
Assassin |
|
Warrior |
|
Ranger |
|
- Specialist – heroes with this role can use their special ability to passively aid other heroes in combat. They are strictly support roles considering their very weak ATK.
Class | Specializations / Strengths |
Healer |
|
Support |
|
Warlock |
|
- Tank – heroes with this role have plenty of HP and DEF, which makes them ideal for shielding the other heroes from damage.
Class | Specializations / Strengths |
Guardian |
|
Bruiser |
|
Warden |

Special Abilities
Each hero has a special ability that can be extremely useful when used during combat. Additionally, it can even be activated even if it is not the hero’s turn. But, a hero’s Mana bar must first be filled in order to use it. With that said, heroes with a high MANA GAIN stat will be able to frequently activate their special ability.
There are various special abilities that heroes can have. It is entirely contingent on what their role and class are. Generally speaking, some special abilities can deal (greater) damage, restore depleted HP, give buffs, and the like.
Make sure to check your hero’s special ability by checking their profile in the Heroes menu.
Unlocking More Heroes
You will eventually need new heroes to replace some weaker ones in your current roster. Through the Altar, you can summon newer (maybe even stronger) heroes by opening scrolls.
There are four types of scrolls in Gemstone Legends. Each type of scrolls contains several chances of acquiring a hero of a certain rarity. The details are in the table below:
Scroll Type | Common | Uncommon | Rare | Epic | Legendary |
Bronze | 64% | 34% | 2% | 0% | 0% |
Silver | 0% | 91.5% | 8% | 0.5% | 0% |
Gold | 0% | 0% | 91.5% | 8% | 0.5% |
Platinum | 0% | 0% | 0% | 92% | 8% |
Some of the easiest ways of acquiring scrolls is by completing levels of the campaign and by directly buying some from the Altar.
Upgrading Heroes
Heroes progressively become stronger by leveling up. Regardless of rarity, a hero will always start at Level 1. In order to level up a hero, you are going to need plenty of XP.
XP is gained by simply playing through the campaign. You can repeat battles in order to farm XP for your heroes. A faster method of levelling up is exchanging XP Dummies and unused heroes for XP to a selected hero.
Another way that you can try is training. Unlocked during the Amber Sands campaign, training allows you to choose a hero and then passively farm XP for that hero for a certain amount of time.
Your hero will eventually reach their limit when they upgrade to Level 30. At this point, you can ascend the hero by sacrificing several heroes with the same number of stars. Ascending a hero will increase their rarity star by one. Additionally, the hero will also go back to Level 1 but at least their level and stat caps are higher now compared to before.
These are all of the things that you need to know about heroes in Gemstone Legends. The gist is that heroes are composed of various stats and capabilities and you need to constantly upgrade them to make them formidable enough to face future obstacles.
