The Best Mighty Doom Beginner’s Guide With Everything You Need to Know to Get a Good Start
As a large departure from its typical genre and play style, Mighty Doom can be a bit perplexing for gamers, especially if you’re a fan of the original Doom games the series is known for. Instead of an FPS game with pure unadulterated action at every corner, Mighty Doom is a top-down shooter, akin to a twin-stick shooter game, where we must travel across various hallways and fight the monsters that spawn, while avoiding taking damage. The idea is to survive throughout all the levels in a stage, taking out the bosses at every checkpoint, and defeat the final boss enemy at the end, in order to unlock the next chapter and repeat the process.

Aside from this shooter aspect, Mighty Doom also incorporates elements from other mobile games, including from the RPG and gacha genres. These elements surface in the form of unlockable pieces of gear and armor, which are usually obtained from boxes that require premium currency to open, and that can be progressively upgraded using currency and resources, in order to enhance their stats and performance. These unlock and upgrade aspects feed directly into the core gameplay, as having better gear will make it easier to progress further into every chapter, and will help you to have a much better time fighting against the enemies that stand in your way.
With a game so different from its core roots, it’s understandable that some of you might struggle with getting used to the progression and gameplay aspects. As such, we’ve prepared this Mighty Doom beginner’s guide with all the info that you might need to know to get started on the right track.
Let’s begin!
Mighty Doom Gameplay Basics
Like the other games in the series, Mighty Doom is all about ripping and tearing through hordes of enemies until we reach the end of the stage. However, instead of a regular FPS, Mighty Doom is played from a top down perspective, where we must control the Mini Slayer, a bite-sized version of the Doom Slayer, and he navigates through levels after levels filled to the brim with enemies and hazards.
The controls in this game are simple: You use the joystick to move the Mini Slayer, and use the other buttons on the left to use your special weapons. Meanwhile, the Slayer is constantly automatically shooting at the nearest enemy with his main weapon, so you don’t have to shoot or aim manually. This style of gameplay is quite simple, especially if you play Mighty Doom on PC with BlueStacks, since you can just use your mouse and keyboard, or your gamepad, to control the action with superior precision, compared to playing with virtual touchscreen controls.
Every monster you defeat will drop coins, which are used for unlocking permanent upgrades for your Slayer, as well as battle points, which will increase your level and unlock temporary upgrades for the current run. The idea then is to defeat the enemies while avoiding taking damage, and survive through a long series of levels in order to reach the final boss and destroy it in order to unlock the next chapter, which will hold tougher challenges and enemies.
Combat Upgrades
As you make your way through the stages, you’ll pick up battle experience that will help you to level up your Slayer for the current run. Once enough points are acquired, you’ll level up and will be able to choose between three different passive bonuses. Much like in a roguelike game, these bonuses are temporary and last only for the current run, regardless of whether you make it all the way to the end and defeat the boss, or you’re defeated before reaching the end.
Choosing the right bonuses for the situation at hand is vital to your success, as some builds can be better than others depending on your specific setup. As such, always make sure you’re using the right upgrades for your current build.
Unlocking New Gear
Everything you do during your explorations will reward you with currency and resources that you can use to unlock new pieces of gear, which in turn will give you more tools to use in combat. However, the main way to acquire this gear is via opening boxes from the store, which will yield random results including weapons or armor of varying rarities.
Most of these boxes require Crystals, the premium currency in Mighty Doom, to open them. Moreover, the results you get will vary according to the type of box, with the Special Crates being the most expensive and the only ones with a chance to contain Epic gear, which is the highest rarity. Luckily, some of these crates are also available to open for free every day, so make sure you log in and claim them all so you don’t miss out on these rewards.
Different Weapon and Damage Types
Mighty Doom, just like the other games in the series, has a ton of different weapons to unlock, each of which have their own damage types and usages. As such, while some weapons can shoot missiles or grenades and deal explosive damage, others might shoot energy projectiles to deal plasma damage, or shoot bullets to deal ballistic damage. While the type of weapon will inevitably alter the way you approach combat, the damage type you inflict will also play an important role during your exploration, as some enemy types are weak to certain damage types.
There are four types of weapons—or rather, four different weapon slots—in Mighty Doom:
- Main Weapons: These are your bread and butter in the field, and are the weapons that the Mini Slayer will be using for the majority of the runs. They often deal weak-yet-continuous damage to the targets, though you can greatly improve their potential through upgrades and other buffs.
- Power Weapons: These powerful weapons can be activated manually, and enter a cooldown state after every use. As such, they are used for dealing strong burst damage to certain targets. Additionally, certain weapon types, like the Rocket Launches, while not as strong as other power weapons, can deal important splash damage to take down multiple targets in one shot.
- Ultimates: The most powerful weapons in the game, which can only be used once your ultimate bar is full. You can fill this bar by slaying enemies on the field. These weapons are better if you save them for bosses, as they take roughly around 8 to 9 stages to charge.
- Launchers: The final slot corresponds to utility weapons that, while not always inflicting as much damage as others, can attack with additional effects, or can even inflict powerful elemental damage. As such, these are more circumstantial, but can be very useful if used at the right times.
The Mini Slayer can equip one of each of these weapon types at any given moment, and they are represented by the four equipment slots on the left side of the gear screen. The weapons you decide to equip here will strongly influence your approach to combat and will, for all effects and purposes, make up your “build” for the Mini Slayer.
Keep in mind that, once you find weapons that you enjoy using, you can upgrade them by spending coins along with the corresponding tokens for the specific weapon type. These upgrades will increase their damage output and make them into a more destructive force on the field.
Armor and Passives
While the weapons correspond to the four slots on the left of the gear screen, the other four slots on the right correspond to the armor that you can equip to your Mini Slayer. These pieces of gear, just like with the weapons, can be obtained by opening boxes, though you will never know what you’re going to get—such is life in gacha games.
These pieces of armor can not only increase your Slayer’s stats, but can also grant him passive bonuses that further enhance his destructive potential on the field. Furthermore, just like with his weapons, these pieces can also be upgraded to increase not only the stats they confer, but also amplify the passive bonuses that they grant the Slayer.
Upgrades and Masteries
Last but not least, another way to enhance the power of your Slayer, aside from upgrading your weapons and armor, is by rolling on new masteries. This is done through its own specific tab, and requires you to “roll” on these upgrades by spending coins.
Each enhancement will upgrade a certain aspect of your Slayer, granting him permanent increases to his damage output, max HP, healing received, and damage resistance, among others. However, the catch here is that each roll costs coins, and that you can’t choose a specific aspect to upgrade, but rather leave it up to luck. This randomized upgrade system makes it unreliable for boosting your character’s skill in a specific way, and is therefore recommended to purchase only if you have a surplus of coins lying around.
And with that, you now have everything you need in order to get a good start in Mighty Doom. Just remember that, above all else, you can get the best experience by playing this game on PC with BlueStacks. Feel free to leave your thoughts and comments in the section below!
