ZIO and the Magic Scrolls Beginner’s Guide and Tips
The new ZIO and the Magic Scrolls have been out for a few weeks already, and we’ve been excited to explore its mechanics and systems. Luckily for veterans of the mobile idle RPG genre, there’s really not much new to see here, which means that you’ll feel right at home if you have some experience with this genre. Similarly, for newcomers, this game is quite straightforward and easy to get into, particularly since its combat and farming mechanics are automated.
Nevertheless, if you’re just starting and want to begin on the right track, this beginner’s guide might help get you up to speed.
The Different Character and Damage Types
There are two important factors you should know about the characters in this gacha RPG, aside from their rarity, of course. These factors are the character types, as well as their damage type.
All the characters in this game fall into different types, which can be either Human, God, Demon, or Immortal. These types are analogous to the “elemental” systems in other mobile RPGs, in the sense that each type is strong against one, and weak against another, with the exception of the Immortals, which fall outside of this dynamic. In this sense, the most important thing you need to know about character types is that:
- Humans are strong against Gods
- Gods are strong against Demons
- Demons are strong against Humans
Immortals, as we mentioned above, are outside this dynamic and aren’t either weak nor strong against other types.
When it comes to attack types, things are much simpler. There are only two types of attacks in ZIO and the Magic Scrolls: Physical, and magical damage. This is important only for certain skills which may activate with certain types of attacks. For example, Sumima’s “Magic Reflex” skill only activates whenever he receives magical damage.
Another tidbit here that might be worth mentioning is that every character can equip different armor types: Cloth, leather, or plate metal. This doesn’t affect much in practice; it just affects the type of gear that they can equip.
Combat and Abilities
The combat in this game is completely automated, with the exception of the magic scrolls, which we’ll talk about further down. Each of the characters that you take into battle generate mana every time they attack an enemy, which is represented by the blue bar beneath their HP bars. When this mana bar is full, your characters will automatically use their special skills.
Knowing about the skills of each character before jumping into battle is essential to creating good formations, especially since you can optimize the effectiveness of said skills by correctly positioning your characters in formation.
For instance, Zio’s skills deal damage to all nearby units, which means that he can benefit greatly from being in the middle of the front row, since it’ll allow him to be closer to the enemy’s melee attackers, and therefore affect the largest number of targets possible. Similarly, other characters might benefit considerably from being in other specific positions—it all boils down to reading their skills and understanding how they work.
Magic Scrolls and Their Uses
Magic Scrolls are the only combat mechanic which you have control over. They are essentially spells that you can use whenever you have enough energy. And energy, on the other hand, is a resource that generates automatically over time, that functions similarly to the energy meters in card-based RPGs like Clash Royale, Revolve8, or Magic: ManaStrike, among others. Simply put, when you have enough mana, you can click on any of your magical scrolls to unleash their skills.
There are many different types of scrolls in the game, some of which can deal damage, while others can heal allies, buff them, or even cripple the enemy. These scrolls must be equipped beforehand in order to use them in combat, which you can do via the “Scroll” button on the lower right of the battle formation screen. Moreover, you’re limited to three scrolls at any given moment, and their combined energy cost must not exceed 20 points. And since the stronger scrolls cost more mana, you’ll need to strike balance between potent and weaker scrolls.
To obtain new scrolls, you must first craft them in Manadonna, from the Kingdom screen. However, you must first fulfill certain prerequisites to unlock them before actually being able to craft them.
The Gacha Summoning Mechanic
As is the case with most gacha games, the main way that you’ll obtain new characters in ZIO and the Magic Scrolls is through the summoning features. By paying resources, you will get a chance to receive a randomized character from the gacha which, more often than not, will end up being trash. However, there’s a small chance that you might actually unlock an S tier character that will help to trivialize most of the main campaign. This chance is very slim, though.
If you’re interested in getting a good start in this game, you might want to consider rerolling in ZIO and the Magic Scrolls, in order to unlock the best characters from the very beginning. The process is quite quick in this game, especially if you’re playing ZIO and the Magic Scrolls on PC with BlueStacks, since you’ll be able to reroll on multiple accounts at the same time.
Upgrading and Outfitting Your Characters
However, even if you manage to unlock the best units in the game, you’ll need to upgrade and outfit them in order to unleash their maximum potential. Fortunately, this process is very easy and mostly automated, like many other aspects in this game.
To both level up your units and equip them with gear, you must go to the hero menu, and click on the character you wish to upgrade. To increase their level, you must have enough hero EXP and gold, both of which are resources you obtain from AFK farming, as well as from completing challenges. To equip them with gear, all you need to do is click on the “Auto” button. This will effectively outfit them with the best gear currently at your disposal. However, you’ll obviously first need to farm the equipment yourself, which can be done primarily through AFK farming, at least at the beginning.
This is essentially all you need to know in order to get started on the right track in ZIO of the Magic Scrolls. Feel free to share your own beginner tips and tricks in the comments below to help out your fellow gamers!
