Keep in mind this is not going to be a thorough guide that set’s you up on the game’s mechanics but rather some tips to help you survive longer. Let’s begin!

Tip #1. Build Your Base the Right Way

The first step is to build your home base and have a secure place to store loot. Unfortunately, you only have very little resources when the game first launches, so just construct a basic 2X2 or 3X3 hut. Since you only need the outer walls, one way to save wood is to build the floor tiles only on the outside. The fact that you cannot produce any of your own food or water until you have unlocked the required buildings (Well for water, Garden Bed for leeks, Fire for Roasted Meat, Campfire for Berry Drink and Onion Soup) makes the initial shortage of both worse.

Tip #2. Eating Berries to Keep your Vitals In Check

Berries are found practically everywhere and can be consumed to partially replenish hunger, thirst, and HP. It should be noted that your character will feel extremely queasy and have to throw up after consuming 10 hollyberries. Up until you use the secondary action button to throw up, you will be unable to attack and have significantly slower movement. Try not to use these berries in the heat of battle (unless you keep track of how many you have consumed) to prevent an untimely death. But this illness is not caused by hollyberries.

Tip #3. Do Not Focus on Building the Stable First

First, forget the stable. You can’t finish it in the early game. You are not in the clear yet, even after you have mastered all of the aforementioned fundamentals. Put the stone working bench, stable, and bandage on hold for the time being. Instead, unlock the shirt, cart thill, garden bed, and fire. Many more materials are needed for the stable, some of which are rare drops found only in dungeons. Save this one for the middle to late stages of the game. In the early game, the stone working bench is primarily used to produce blocks that you can use to upgrade your walls or trade with merchants. Instead, use your points to purchase armor.

Tip #4. Don’t Be Afraid to Loot Materials

It is frustrating that some materials can only be obtained by looting chests or monster drops, but farming materials like wood, stone, and metals (copper, tin, etc.) is doable. Here is a list of the materials that can only be looted:

  • Copper Fragments
  • Candles
  • Seeds
  • Grate
  • Leather Cords

Tip #5. Run when Backed Into A Corner

There are no magic-casting characters or powerful AOE abilities in Grim Soul. In the event that a swarm of creatures surrounds you, make a quick escape and leave the area. Depending on how much time has passed and/or other factors, some or all of the mobs may have returned to their original positions by the time you return. Keep an eye out for enemies that appear at random, like:

  • The ‘Regular’ mob (Dire Wolves, Bear, Lepers)
  • NPC Players
  • Night Guest

When you enter and exit the area, the regular random spawn will remain there. However, be aware that you will need to kill those if you wish to carry on farming in that area. Simply flee from NPC players, or kill them if you’re feeling lucky. Sometimes they make really good stuff. The Night Guest is unbreakable; either flee quickly or arm yourself with a torch.
