Before you play Real Racing 3 competitively online, you might want to polish your skills at driving in the game so that you don’t end up getting surprised at the difference between you and veteran players. Driving isn’t as simple as properly steering left and right. There are a lot of skills that you can learn which will affect your overall ability to race against other players despite your starting position. In the end, it all comes down to how you can handle your vehicle on the track.

Real Racing 3 uses standard racing controls which means that universal racing simulators apply to this game. It doesn’t include any weird gimmicks so you don’t have to worry about having to learn new mechanics that you’re not used to. We already created a Beginner’s Guide that helps players get a basic introduction to the different features of Real Racing 3. The only thing left is learning how to drive at a level that prepares you to compete against other players or against difficult tracks.

Setting Up Your Controls

Before learning how to improve your driving skills, make sure that you’ve set up the proper controls to help you win. It is recommended to play with a controller whether you’re on PC with BlueStacks or you are playing on your phone. However, if you’re playing on your phone it might be more proactive to use touch steering instead of tilt steering since it will allow you to see sudden turns more easily as compared to when your phone’s screen is moving too much while driving.

It’s also a good idea to keep acceleration on if you’re a total beginner but your steering becomes more flexible if you learn how to use manual acceleration while being able to steer left and right. Don’t use the steering wheel option even though it might look cooler on your screen. It actually makes steering unnecessarily difficult. Also, it might be a good idea to adjust steering sensitivity according to your preferences. Don’t be afraid to keep testing different configurations until you find the perfect set of controls.

Steering

Steering is arguably the most important skill to develop in racing simulators that’s also severely underestimated. Normal gamers assume that it’s just as easy as turning left and right when you’re about to reach a curve but the ability to steer your vehicle properly is the skill that separates beginners from veterans. Players will quickly realize that spamming left and right at every turn isn’t the right strategy when you’re trying to take 1st place in a race because there are so many factors that affect placement.

The most important factor to keep in mind is acceleration and top speed. These factors are heavily affected by everything you do especially when you’re improperly steering your vehicle. The best way to accelerate your vehicle and reach your max top speed is to steer your vehicle less often. Turning left and right decelerates your vehicle and affects your overall top speed. As such, it’s better to take as many straights as possible and steer your vehicle only when you need to overtake, dodge, or turn into a curve.

Taking Advantage of the Track

Knowing how to use the track is the epitome of racing knowledge. Knowing how to take advantage of corners, straights, and bumps will allow you to overtake your opponents who are unable to use these to their benefit. Keep in mind that asphalt tracks aren’t the only type of race course out there since there are also rough tracks like dirt trails, sand & gravel roads, and rocky terrain for different types of races but you don’t have to worry too much about that in Real Racing 3.

The first thing you need to do before you start a race is to study the track and see if there are any sharp turns or obstacles to keep in mind. Sharp turns are difficult to navigate but being able to be prepared will help you overtake your opponents. Also, try to use inside turns as much as possible unless you’re trying to overtake an opponent. Don’t attempt to go off track even though it might seem like the smart thing to do since rough terrain significantly decelerates your vehicle and only hurts your overall race position.

Drifting

Drifting is probably the most overrated thing in racing. People often love the idea of drifting because it looks cool but it isn’t a universal tactic to be used at every opportunity. Drifting is useful when going into sharp corners at top speed or navigating through rough terrain. Other than those situations, you shouldn’t try to attempt drifting because it involves cutting your current top speed to make sure that you don’t bump into terrain that will cause your vehicle to totally stop or be derailed from the course.

We do recommend studying how to drift since it’s still an important skill to learn in some situations. We just recommend that you don’t use it every time you attempt to turn a curve in a track. Drifting involves the usage of a sudden break while hard steering into the direction you need to go. It’s recommended in turns that are about 70 to 130-degree angles. Try to practice it in a track that has a lot of sharp turns and work on your technique until your vehicle doesn’t reach a full-stop whenever you attempt to drift.

Camera Angle Usage

Using camera angles is the same as using rear-view or side-view mirrors. It’s extremely important to use these when racing because you need to know if an opponent is attempting to overtake or attack you on the track. In racing simulators, bumping into other racers is common ground, unlike real-life racing which has actual life-threatening risks involved. Getting attacked by another player can be devastating because it can derail you off the track or lower your overall speed.

Watch the movement of the racers in front, beside, and behind you to look for opportunities where you can make a move. The goal is to not get trapped between multiple vehicles because it will prevent you from overtaking the vehicles in front. Always position yourself where you can make turns and prevent other racers from overtaking your place.
