Zenless Zone Zero is an immersive action RPG developed by HoYoverse that boasts futuristic cities and a thematic combat system. Players can collect different characters called “Agents” to proceed with missions. Learn more about the backstory and unveil the mysteries surrounding Hollows. Gearing is an important task in Zenless Zone Zero, regardless of whatever stage of the game you’re at. This guide aims to break down the gearing system and explain all the mechanics pertaining to it for your growth.

Type of Gear in Zenless Zone Zero

In Zenless Zone Zero, there is not just 1 system under which all gearing takes place. There are multiple layers to it, each adding peculiar amounts of strength to your agents. Gear can be described as equipment that you equip agents to provide them with extra stats and attributes. It can be divided into multiple parts:

  • W-Engines
  • Drive Discs
  • Bangboo

W-Engines

W-Engines are weapons in Zenless Zone Zero that boost the base attack of Agents. In addition, each W-Engine has its own set of advanced stats and effects.  They can be equipped with any Agent and can further be upgraded as well to boost the stats provided. They can be obtained in the following ways:

Zenless Zone Zero: All You Need to Know About the Gearing System

  • W-Engines can be purchased from the gadget shop Box Galaxy.
  • You can also obtain W-Engines by finishing Proxy Primer.
  • Purchasing W-Engines includes W-Engine modification materials, Dennies, and W-Engine Chips.
  • You can obtain W-Engine Chips via recycling A-Rank W-Engines or performing specific side tasks.

Players can upgrade their acquired W-engines by using a resource called W-Engine Power Sources. Once upgraded, they offer a higher base attack to the agent. You can get more W-Engine Power Sources from VR Trails and Item Crafting. Another thing obtained from these areas is W-Engine Components. They are another resource used to modify the W-Engines. Using them, you can increase the level cap on top of providing advanced stats. Naturally, the Inter Knot level of the W-Engine should be high enough to upgrade them. Secondly, the parts required to upgrade a W-Engine vary depending on their type. Furthermore, you can use the same W-Engines for W-Engine Updates, which increase the W-Engine’s Phase and improve its W-Engine effects.

Drive Discs

Drive Discs are equipment items that provide various buffs and enhancements to your characters. They can boost stats such as attack power, defense, speed, and special abilities. Each character can equip multiple Drive Discs, allowing for a high degree of customization. They are equipped with the W-Engines, particularly in the 6 small circles engraved inside them. There are 3 distinct types of Drive Discs:

Offensive Discs: Increase attack power, critical hit rate, and damage output. Ideal for your main damage dealers.

Defensive Discs: Enhance defense, health, and resistance to various debuffs. Perfect for tanks and frontline characters.

Utility Discs: Provide bonuses such as increased movement speed, faster cooldowns, or enhanced support abilities. Useful for supporting characters or to improve overall team efficiency.

To equip a Drive Disc, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to the character menu, select the character you want to equip and choose suitable Drive Discs based on their role and needs. Balance offensive and defensive capabilities to maintain a versatile team.

Drive discs can be equipped with any agent, up to a maximum of 6 types. Each drive disc has 1 main stat and 4 substats. The base stats of Drive Discs I, II, and III always grant a benefit to HP, ATK, and DEF, while the basis stats of Drive Discs IV, V, and VI vary. They come in different sets, each of which provides an additional set effect. Upon equipping all the Drive Discs of the same set, you will activate that effect for your Agent. You can get more Drive Discs from the following areas:

  • Plating Agents can be used at the music store Bardic Needle to tune new random Drive Discs.
  • When your Inter-Knot Level reaches a certain threshold, the music store will also level up. When the music store reaches a specific level, the Track Settings feature will be accessible.
  • You can adjust the Tuning Orientation to improve the drop rate of the specified Drive Disc set.

Bangboo

Bangboos are intelligent robots that are scattered throughout the city of New Eridu. Thanks to advancements in technology in the near future, these hybrid robots were crafted to assist humans in multiple tasks. They make robotic noises and are easy to identify in the open. Next time you hear a “beep boop” sound nearby, consider yourself lucky as you have just encountered a Bangboo. These robots also come in different rarities – S Rank and A Rank. Naturally, the higher rarity ones are better in terms of stats and abilities. Each Bangboo possesses three skills:

Zenless Zone Zero: All You Need to Know About the Gearing System

  • Active skill: Termed as A, it is employed automatically by the Bangboo at varying frequencies (typically 3-5 times per minute),
  • Additional/Passive Ability: Termed as B, it is a passive on-field effect that is active only if you meet its prerequisites.
  • Bangboo Chain Attack—Termed as C, this is a supplementary chain attack that can be used every few minutes for extra damage.

You can level your Bangboo in the same way as you level Agents, which will boost their base stats (HP, ATK, and DEF). Still, the Impact metric does not vary with levels and will always be the same. Further, Bangboos can be ascended as well up to 5 times. Each ascension enhanced their abilities as well as their multipliers.
