Edge: Mech-Ascent on PC - Detailed Look at the Top Tier Characters in the Game
On another occasion, we posted our Edge: Mech-Ascent tier list where we gave an overview of what we think are the best characters in the game as of launch. In it, we merely provided a list of these characters without really explaining why we chose them, which is useful if you’re just looking for a quick guide for rerolling. However, in this guide, we’ll be diving a bit deeper and exploring what makes these Edge: Mech-Ascent heroes good (or bad), so that you can get an idea of what to look for if you want to create your own tier lists.
Best Edge: Mech-Ascent Tier List
Without further ado, let’s get started!
S Tier
As mentioned usually in our tier lists, the S tier corresponds to the units that can singlehandedly carry entire teams on their backs. These heroes seldom need external support and can handle most of the heavy lifting by themselves. If you’re rerolling in Edge: Mech-Ascent, try to aim for at least one of these heroes:
-
NĂwa (Celestial, 5-star Mythic, Mage)
Some characters are good for their complex setups and ability to combine their own skills to create powerful effects. NĂwa, on the other hand, is quite straightforward as her kit revolves around her ability to enhance her own stats in order to boost her already-formidable damage to the highest levels, turning her into arguably one of the strongest DPS units in the game.
NĂwa’s kit focuses on increasing her own ability to deal magical damage, while also adding a bit of CC into the mix. The result is a character that can not only burst down anyone that stands in their way, but also keep them under control while the rest of her team continues DPSing uninterrupted.
-
Michael (Celestial, 5-Star Mythic, Tank)
With max PDEF, MDEF, and HP values, Michael is possibly one of the strongest tanks in the game, a fact that is compounded by the hero’s repertoire of skills that allow her to keep the enemy locked down under stun effects, while boosting her own defense and even keeping her team healed up.
Michael is arguably one of the best units that you can have in your team. Though her damage is a bit weak, she’s a one-person support and tank. If you add a powerful DPS to the mix, you’ll have a strong foundation to carry you through the story missions.
-
Niyue (Fiend, 5-Star Mythic, Tank)
This one is a more offensive tank compared to Michael, with skills that can not only stun the enemy, but also heal herself to keep her in the fight. Niyue has a stronger focus on offensive attacks, being able to occupy the frontlines and keep the enemy in check at all times, while shirking the role of support that Michael can fulfill. As such, she is a high-risk-high-reward character that can hold her own in a fight, but that may need a bit of support in the more difficult stages.
Niyue’s skill set is quite straightforward, with abilities to harm single or multiple targets while also occasionally inflicting them with stun effects
-
Nidhogg (Fiend, 5-Star Mythic, Assassin)
As the first assassin character on this list, Nidhogg is arguably one of the best units at targeting and dispatching high value targets quickly, allowing her to deal with the biggest threats on the enemy team without missing a beat. However, while dealing damage is her main focus, Nidhogg also has skills to heal herself and keep herself in combat for longer, making her into a versatile DPS.
Her skill set revolves around skills that deal heavy damage to single targets, both in a direct manner as well as through the application of DoTs. Her Blood Banquet skill, in particular, can be quite devastating as she deals a total of 160% damage to the enemy across 6 hits, while distributing 80% of all the damage inflicted equally among her teammates as healing. As such, Nidhogg is a great DPS that can also provide valuable support while dealing damage.
A Tier
Just like with the S tier characters, the heroes in this category have the ability to carry their teams quite easily. However, in order to achieve, they might rely on having a good team composition, or a good support setup so they can unleash their full potential. Still, having a few of these in your team can easily take you through the entire campaign without breaking a sweat.
-
Jin (Beastkin, 5-Star Mythic, Gunner)
This is a very interesting character in the sense that he doesn’t do that much damage by himself, but all of his skills are AoE, which makes him a master at dispatching hordes of weaker enemies with ease. However, Jin really brings the hurt with his burn effects that continue dealing damage for the following turns, inflicting a % of the user’s ATK stat as TRUE damage (can’t be reduced by defensive stats).
Jin is a great all-around character that, while he won’t be carrying you through tough boss encounters, will significantly enhance your performance at the regular enemy stages thanks to his powerful AoE moves.
-
Butterfly (Beastkin, 5-star Legendary, Mage)
With a skillset that is a “light” version of Jin’s, Butterfly is also a decent character that specializes in AoE damage and clearing out crowds of weaker enemies with a single move. And while her spells don’t apply any harmful status effects like with Jin, they inflict more direct damage, making her into a bit of a burster.
Butterfly is great especially since she’s a 5-star legendary hero, which makes her much easier to unlock. In our case, we received her from the first pull of the tutorial, but we’re not sure if she’s a predetermined pull. If so, then she definitely earns her spot on this list as she’ll be carrying you through the first few chapters at the very least, as long as you keep her upgraded.
-
Joy (Human, 5-Star Mythic, Tank)
A very straightforward tank that doesn’t have as high stats as the other two in the S tier, but still has a very powerful kit that allows her to stun multiple targets on every turn. Her skills are particularly good since they can hit random targets multiple times, potentially affecting more than a few targets. However, one of her hidden uses is that, once there is only one enemy remaining, her skills will focus entirely on the said target, giving her not only a high probability of stunning the target, but also inflicting all the damage from the multiple hits on just one enemy.
Joy is quite an offensive tank, but the fact that her damage is spread out across multiple targets (when there is more than one enemy alive) means that her usefulness might be limited in general encounters.
-
Tiger Boy (Beastkin, 5-Star Mythic, Tank)
There’s not really much to say about Tiger Boy other than the fact that he’s a very strong tank. His kit is quite straightforward and simply revolves around inflicting damage to one or more targets, with a possibility of also stunning them.
If you want a tank that doesn’t have any gimmicks and that doesn’t need any external assistance to do their job, for the most part, then you really can’t go wrong with this one.
B Tier
These are the more average characters that aren’t bad, but also aren’t good. It’s very likely that the vast majority of the heroes in your squad will fall into this category initially. And while you could do much worse than these, you’ll definitely want to replace them as soon as you unlock any other superior heroes.
-
Orangey (Beastkin, 4-star, Assassin)
One of the best assassins that you’ll have early on simply because she’s available from the very beginning. Orangey is a powerful character due to her ability to target enemies in the back rows and soften them up for your other DPS characters to finish them off. And while she can be upgraded to increase her damage, her forte is far from being a one-person demolition squad, unlike some characters in the higher tiers.
One important thing to note about Orangey is her ability to target enemy mages and reduce their damage by a considerable amount. And while this is circumstantial at best, it can mean the difference between life and death whenever you’re going up against tough casters.
-
Josie (Beastkin, 4-star, Support)
While she’s far from being the strongest healer in the game, Josie is a solid choice for a support unit when you first start off. More specifically, her skills let her heal the HP of the entire team by a small amount, while also inflicting damage to the enemy. Moreover, one of her strongest aspects is that she can inflict stun with 100% probability to the enemy with the highest ATK in the enemy team, essentially shutting down their DPS for a duration.
Josie can also boost the speed of her fellow allies in the back row, increasing their damage potential by allowing them to act sooner.
-
Russell (Beastkin, 5-Star Mythic, Gunner)
A strong gunner adept at inflicting damage to single targets. And while her skill set allows her to target multiple enemies at times, her damage potential comes mostly from the debuff that she can inflict with her Spike Arrow skills. Specifically, this skill deals decent damage to a single enemy and inflicts a debuff that deals an additional 30% of the initial damage every turn, for the next 3 turns.
With such a strong debuff, Russell specializes in dealing with tougher minibosses, bosses, and powerful individual targets.
-
Mars (Void, 5-Star Mythic, Tank)
A powerful tank with not only the ability to keep the enemy under control, but he can also go into a rage state that restores 60% of his lost HP and grants him a buff that increases damage dealt and reduces damage received for a duration. Additionally, while Mars specializes in damaging enemies on the front row, he can also use his mighty javelin to pierce through and deal damage to the back rows.
Mars is quite a sturdy tank as well, not only because of his powerful self-heal, but also because of his many passive defensive bonuses.
C Tier
The heroes in the C tier correspond to those units that you won’t want in your team under any circumstances. Either because they don’t conform to the meta, or aren’t very strong to begin with, you’ll be better off leaving these heroes on the bench.
-
Betty (Beastkin, 5-star Legendary, Mage)
Betty is a mage supposedly specialized in dealing damage to multiple targets. However, her skills are not only weak, but they also affect random enemies, spreading out her potential damage and making her a very weak unit all around.
Her only saving grace is her ultimate, which inflicts heavy damage to all enemies. However, this doesn’t make up for her lack of DPS potential overall.
-
Hunter (Fiend, 5-star Legendary, Gunner)
This isn’t a weak unit per se, but she isn’t very strong, either. Her skills are just serviceable, inflicting decent damage but without any major special effects on top. Still, she does have some good damage potential, especially if you pair her up with other units that can buff and increase her attack. Regardless, why spend time creating a strategy revolving around Hunter, when you could go for better characters that don’t need all that setup in order to achieve their potential?
Hunter is a good example of a character that you won’t want to swap as soon as you can, but you should still replace her if you get a better unit.
-
Crown Prince (Celestial, 5-star Legendary, Warrior)
Just like with Hunter, Crown Prince isn’t outright bad. He has lots of skills that focus on dealing decent damage to single targets, as well as entire groups. However, he lacks any sort of buffs or special effects that would make him stand out among the rest, which means that he also relies on having a good team composition in order to achieve his full potential.
Once again, however, there’s really no point in creating a team composition that revolves around sub-par characters when you could just as easily recruit one or two top tier units and call it a day. Regardless, both Crown Prince and Hunter are some of the best low-tier units you could have in this game, and can remain quite serviceable for quite some time. Still, replace them as soon as you get anyone better!
