Sword of Convallaria is a compelling fantasy RPG that transports players to a complex world full of adventure, strategic warfare, and intriguing characters. As a newbie, you must first master the game’s main mechanics, then form a balanced squad and devise ways to properly navigate the game’s intricacies. This thorough beginner guide will teach you all you need to know to begin your journey through Sword of Convallaria and become a formidable player.
Story and Background
Sword of Convallaria is set in a vibrant fantasy world teeming with lore and history. The game’s narrative is integral to the experience, providing context for your quests and the motivations of the characters you encounter. Pay attention to the story as it unfolds through dialogues, cutscenes, and in-game events. Understanding the lore will enhance your immersion and provide valuable insights into the world of Convallaria.
Understanding the Gameplay Mechanics
At its core, Sword of Convallaria is a tactical turn-based RPG that exudes many styles of old school JRPGs. Players can experience tactical turn-by-turn gameplay in a chess-like map divided into multiple squares. Characters can make their moves on these square radiuses. The characters that you will encounter on the battlefield are each assigned a class.
Depending on the class, they will move and react. For example, rogue assassins can move twice; once when they make their attack, and the other time when they have finished their attack. Similarly, some classes can counter attack. It’s imperative that you learn more about each individual hero and class to be able to adapt perfectly to the game mechanics.
Your allies and foes, both will move only when it’s their turn or if they have an ability which grants them an extra turn. The game functions in a turn-based order, and the turn order is further decided by the speed of each character. The battles can be quite time consuming and tactical in nature, thanks to tons of traps, and other shenanigans on the battlefield. At max, you can deploy up to 5 different heroes in your team. The characters are beautifully modelled in 3D real-time colors and exude multiple animations for their different abilities.
Lastly, the game also features many helpful quality-of-life features to avoid players from getting bored and tired by the repetitive processes. Some of the features are 2X battle speed and auto-battling. However, personally we found the latter to be somewhat lacklustre in the last closed beta test. The AI is unreliable and does not always make the smart move, resulting in stage failures many times if the stage requires you to solve a puzzle.
Sword of Convallaria: Heroes and Gacha System
The best part about live-service games like Sword of Convallaria remains to be the lucrative amount of heroes available to be collected and used. Players will be able to do so with the innate gacha system present in the game. You will be collecting various different gacha currencies and using them on multiple types of banners to get the heroes you desire. We recommend checking out a thorough gacha guide to kick-start your dopamine rush!
On the other hand, Sword of Convallaria also boasts many traditional RPG tropes such as the abilty to increase the power of your collected heroes, regardless of their rarity. Characters gain experience points (XP) from battles and quests, allowing them to level up. As characters level up, they gain stat boosts and skill points, which can be used to unlock or enhance abilities. Building a well-rounded team and progressing your characters effectively is crucial for overcoming the game’s challenges.
Equipment and Skills
Equipping your characters with the best gear available is crucial for enhancing their combat effectiveness. Weapons, armor, and accessories can significantly boost a character’s stats and abilities. Regularly upgrade your equipment to keep up with the increasing difficulty of the game.
Each character has a unique set of skills. As characters level up, they earn skill points that can be used to unlock or upgrade these abilities. Prioritize skills that enhance your team’s strengths and cover their weaknesses. For example, improve your healer’s healing abilities or your tank’s defensive skills.
Sword of Convallaria: Combat Tips and Tricks
From our experiences with the last closed beta test in Sword of Convallaria, we have formulated some helpful tips and tricks for new players that will start their adventures upon global release. They are as follows:
- Positioning is Key – Place your tanky characters at the front to absorb damage and protect your backline. Healers and damage dealers should stay at a safe distance, allowing them to perform their roles without being targeted by enemies. Use flanking maneuvers to attack enemies from multiple sides. Surrounding an enemy can limit their movement options and increase the effectiveness of your attacks.
- Take the High Ground – High ground provides attack and defense bonuses. Position ranged attackers on high ground for increased damage and better protection. Similarly, use obstacles to block enemy movement and attacks. Position your characters behind cover to reduce incoming damage.
- Synergy and Timing – Save powerful abilities for crucial moments. Using them too early can leave you vulnerable later in the battle. Combine abilities for maximum effect. For example, use a debuff ability to weaken an enemy before hitting them with a powerful attack.
